Paytm announced that its user base crossed
200 million Wallets. The Fintech company has crossed this milestone only within
a time frame of 3 years of launching the wallet service to its customers. Paytm
is a payment and e-commerce firm which was launched in 2010. Paytm which is
acronym for Pay Though Mobile is a brand of One97 Communications. However, the
company reached its peak it 2016 as an aftereffect of the much publicised
demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee notes.
However, the Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) application is
giving a close competition with 17 million downloads just only after two months
after its launch. According to Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog, this is a
world record.
BHIM is a Mobile Application developed by National Payments
Corporation of India based on the Unified Payment Interface (UPI). The App was launched in December 2016 to
facilitate digital payments and to promote cashless transactions in India. Following the demonetisation move, India has
witnessed a serious cash crunch because of less currency notes in circulation.
Although a certain
segment of the urban India was acquainted with the digital payment system,
rural India had massively suffered due to the demonetisation drive. BHIM was
launched as part of the Digi Dhan Yojna introduced by Mr. Narendra Modi, the
Prime Minister of India.
